Watermelon Sugar

"In watermelon sugar the deeds were done and done again as my life is done in watermelon sugar. I'll tell you about it because I am here and you are distant. Wherever you are, we must do the best we can. It is so far to travel, and we have nothing here to travel, except watermelon sugar. I hope this works out."

—Richard Brautigan

Watermelon Sugar - Something To Savor

Watermelon Sugar – “Something to Savor” – This duo does a nice job of mixing it up. The tempos, styles, instruments, and topics run the gamut of the female folk/bluegrass genre, so there’s a little here for everyone. Unlike many acts, however, on most tracks the singers’ voices do not blend into each other but remain distinct, and they also sound separated from the instruments; each layer of sound is striking, and the surprising effect pulls the listener’s attention in more than one direction. The funny songs are the CD’s strongest—especially “Republican Shocker,” which is bound to please the politically liberal coffeehouse crowd—with the fragile lead voice making an interesting counterpoint to the lyrics’ razor-sharp jabs.
