One Loop at a Time hooked rug show has proven to be among the most popular ever hung at the Ice House Gallery and it closes on Sunday with the Grand Hook-In and a free performance by the indie folk duo, Watermelon Sugar.
Hypatia Kingsley and Louise Bendall generate soulful harmonies accompanied by guitars, banjo, violin and mandolin, creating music classified as everything from blues to punk to progressive rock.
Kingsley’s coppery, forged voice and Bendall’s sonorous, wood smoked voice bring a snug cabin feel to the Ice Gallery as they sing surrounded by the hooked rugs. The Gettysburg natives have two CDs out and are preparing to release a third. Their performance from 1 to 2:30 p.m. draws audience who may also participate in the final voting for the Peoples Choice: best rug in the show. The winner is scheduled to be announced at 3 p.m.
A rug hooking workshop featuring the widely published rug hooker, Abby Vakay, explores non-traditional techniques for the art on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ice House Gallery.
The Ice House Gallery shows are produced by the Morgan Arts Council regularly throughout the year with funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and local hotel taxes. The next show celebrates Youth Art Month and features the work of Morgan County students. It opens on Friday, March 24. For more information call 258-2300.
