Watermelon Sugar

"In watermelon sugar the deeds were done and done again as my life is done in watermelon sugar. I'll tell you about it because I am here and you are distant. Wherever you are, we must do the best we can. It is so far to travel, and we have nothing here to travel, except watermelon sugar. I hope this works out."

—Richard Brautigan

Watermelon Sugar returns to Ragged Edge
The Gettysburg Times
Apr 13, 2005
Watermelon Sugar, a progressive folk musical duo with hometown roots in Gettysburg, will perform a three set concert at the Ragged Edge Coffeehouse, 110 Chambersburg St. on Saturday, April 16th from 7 to 10pm. Admission is free, although donations are accepted at the band's debut CD, "Sample" will be available for sale.

Watermelon Sugar's music, a blend of guitars, violin, banjo and mandolin combined with complex vocal harmonies, has been likened to that from artists such as the Throwing Muses, Indigo Girls and Be Good Tanyas.

Members Hypatia Kingsley and Louise Bendall, both Gettysburg High School graduates, expressed their excitement at returning to their hometown and the venue that gave the band its start.

"We played six songs at an open mike in the summer of 2003 -- it was our first public performance," Bendall said. "We're thrilled to be invited back to headline an entire evening of music and we look forward to our friends, family and fans joining us."

Kingsley added, "We've even invited Duane Botterbusch, the Gettysburg High School orchestra director and my former violin teacher."

In addition to the concert, an opening reception for Ardith Kingsley, a local textile artist, will also be held that evening at the coffeehouse. For more information, call the
