Watermelon Sugar, an indie folk musical duo with roots in Gettysburg, while on tour, will return to their hometown to perform a two-set concert in the Blue Parrot Bistro, at 27 Chambersburg St., on Friday, Aug. 5, from 10 p.m. to midnight. There is no cover charge, although tips will be encouraged and the band's debut CD, "Sample," as well as other merchandise will be available for sale.
Watermelon Sugar's music, an intoxicating mix of guitars, violin, banjo and mandolin combined with complex female vocals, has been likened to that of artists such as the Dixie Chicks, Throwing Muses and Be Good Tanyas. Watermelon Sugar is on the latter half of a summer tour that has included stops in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and the District of Columbia. In addition, the band launched a new Web site earlier this month at www.watermelonsugar.com and has been recording their second CD "Something to Savor," which is expected to be released before year's end.
Members Hypatia Kingsley and Louise Bendall, both Gettysburg High School graduates, expressed their appreciation to the community for its continuing support. "We're fortunate to have venues like the Blue Parrot that sponsor independent music right here on our home turf," said Kingsley. Bendall added, "We look forward to playing for our hometown fans, and hopefully adding a few new ones."
