Watermelon Sugar

"In watermelon sugar the deeds were done and done again as my life is done in watermelon sugar. I'll tell you about it because I am here and you are distant. Wherever you are, we must do the best we can. It is so far to travel, and we have nothing here to travel, except watermelon sugar. I hope this works out."

—Richard Brautigan

4th album in the works...
Rubik's Cube Song Play
Rubik's Cube Song
I was just ten, still a child
too old for dolls, too young to drive
playing with toys, not yet with boys.
Six sides and colors, I was consumed
nine stickers each side, Rubik's Cube
a puzzle that changes each time you play it.
There are 42 quintillion possibilities
that's like giving typewriters to one million monkeys
then letting them type for one million years
while they write the complete works of Shakespeare.
Erno Rubik got it right
copycats appeared overnight
that inferior pyramid
the V-Cube-7 and the V-Cube-6.
But 42 quintillion possibilities...

Republican Shocker Play
Republican Shocker
I still cannot believe my ears
Honestly it just seems weird
I assumed and never thought twice
I know assuming is not nice
But of course we can be friends
I'm just shocked to discover...
...you're a Republican
You and I, we go way back
Passing notes in History class
Now I'm just surprised to find
I try to keep an open mind
And of course we can be friends
I'm just shocked to discover...
...you're a Republican
Thought you were independent
No one could represent
All you hope for and believe
But you're a republican
That is somehow shocking
I categorized you as open-minded
Remember we watched Pink Floyd The Wall
And did a few other things I would call
Progressively left wing and liberal
(Solo)
I still cannot believe my ears
Honestly it just seems weird
I assumed and never thought twice
I know assuming is not nice
And of course we can be friends
I'm just shocked to discover...
...you're a Republican
...It's okay
No offense meant

Instrumentation:

Louise T. Bendall: vocals, guitar

Notes
This song is a collaboration between Hypatia's music and Louise's lyrics, which were written on the basis of being somewhat shocked that a close friend from high school was a diehard Republican.

Trouble Play
Trouble
I saw you coming and you looked like trouble
I should have fled but I waited instead
I even met your eyes as you came closer
Close up, you looked just like trouble
I laughed at your jokes I thought you were clever
I flirted with you until you gave me the shivers
And enjoyed it so much
But it felt just like trouble
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
And I know it's trouble
You stood close I could almost taste it
I must admit I breathed you in
You smelled good to me
It reeked of trouble
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
And I know it's trouble
(Solo)
I've been giving thought to temptation and sin
The bed that you make is the one you're going to lie in
I can read your mind when I see that grin
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
I still have you bouncing round in my head
And I know it's trouble

3. Hopeful Play
Hopeful
Struggle will never go away
But tomorrow looks better than today
I'm starting to think we can win
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me hopeful again

Deep down you know what you do
Comes back around to you
Say it with a grin
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me hopeful again

Grow where you're planted
Take nothing for granted
I'm ready to begin
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me believe
You're going to make me hopeful again

Hypatia Kingsley: vocals, mandolin
Notes
Originally written after the 2004 Democratic convention, Hopeful was supposed to be an inspiring anthem that became somewhat of a funereal dirge after the November election. But hey, we can make things better, right? ABSOLUTELY!

4. Pretend Play
Pretend
Once we were as young as puppies rolling on the floor
We would think we'd had enough until we wanted more
All we had was time and what was yours was mine
But now I find my knees are getting sore
Things have gone from bad to worse, at least that's what you'd say
I could talk until I'm hoarse but you'd still walk away
I wanted the last word, but who knows what you heard
Go find a girl who'll let you talk all day
It's time and time and time again and I'm sick of listening, trying
hard just to forget your face, let alone call you my friend
You've taken us down this lonely road and I can't see the end
Baby, don't pretend you love me

You took off to Colorado and left me all alone
My choices were hit the bottle or call you on the phone
But all you did was shout, and tell me to get out
You'll find I've changed the locks when you get home
It's time and time and time again and I'm sick of listening, trying
hard just to forget your face, let alone call you my friend
You've taken us down this lonely road and I can't see the end
Baby, don't pretend you love me
And maybe I won't pretend I loved you
Lyrics
Pretend

Hypatia Kingsley: vocals, rhythm guitar
Louise Bendall: vocals
Andrew McArdle: lead guitar
Notes
Written in a fit of pique after Hypatia's husband took a 10-day camping trip to Colorado, the entirety of this song is fictional except for the "you took off to Colorado" line.

5. Take and Give Play
Take and Give
Every time you swear this is the end
Then you go and do it again
There you go
A thousand people marching in
Not one of them is listening
They just don't care or they don't know
When you get angry count to ten
If you have to start again
Because when you're happy I'm happy too
I cannot stand here and pretend
That all is well, we've made amends
But I'll try not to say something rude
You take it away, you take it away from me
You give it away, you give away everything I need

A master of apologies, the words you use so sticky sweet
So when you're mean to me do you mean to be
Nothing's quite as easy as sin and so we try and try again
To build something out of nothing but debris
You take it away, you take it away from me
You give it away, you give away everything I need

Every time you swear this is the end
Then you go and do it again
There you go

Notes
A quintessential "love sucks" song about a relationship that is all take and no give.
Info
I first heard the beautiful blend of Watermelon Sugar sans mikes
and amps, impromptu. The coppery, forged voice of Hypatia
Kingsley and the sonorous, wood smoked voice of Louise
Bendall carried me away to the proverbial back porch of a plumb,
snug cabin where I was content to stay for hours. Watermelon
Sugar has released their debut CD, Sample consisting of eight
tracks of smart lyrics coupled with a well-rounded, tight combo of
guitars, mandolin and violin. Sample is a balanced mix of paces
that gathers up the listener, holds attention and then gently
releases a new devotee. Among the songs offered, I think "Take
and Give" has a contagious momentum and I wanted to sing the
chorus of "Was it This" the first time I heard it. Whether we are
talking about the perfect harmony of "Baby Bird", a jazzy, upbeat
lullaby or the bittersweet vaudevillian flavor of "Pretend",
Watermelon Sugar delivers. Aptly borrowing their name from
Richard Brautigan's book In Watermelon Sugar, this
contemporary folk duo obviously put their time in at the
Watermelon Works factory and after careful distillation the
essence is Sample.
